Two-apartment combination and renovation
The Priskin’s sold their country house to live in Manhattan, and immediately regret set in at leaving the wide-open farmstead for high-rise quarters. Breyer’s solution was to combine and renovate two apartments, and build a “farmhouse in the sky.” Antique oak flooring and wide v-groove panel walls create the sense of a classic 1930s Americana cottage, with a vast country kitchen inspired by period cabinetry and a collection of pie safes. Contemporary lighting provides a feeling of “today” and lifts the seriousness of strictly adhering to the proposed vernacular. A center column anchors the four loft-like rooms, which offer a large free-flowing space with bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry orbiting off the long entry corridor.
