Renovation and expansion of an early 18th century clapboard cottage
At the onset, the original 18th century clapboard cottage was opened up to accommodate a large loft-like setting for living room, dining room and kitchen, with four restored fireplaces that previously were situated in separate rooms. To accent the library, Breyer commissioned a contemporary steel and glass banister and rail to wrap around a staircase to the lower level entry and rooms.
An addition was designed at the end of a single corridor to create two separate living areas. At the end of the corridor, which follows the path of the scenic Delaware River on the east side of the house, a master suite was built utilizing custom cabinetry to create large bathing, dressing and closet areas. Two hundred-year-old pumpkin pine floors run throughout the entire house to unify the structures. The finished result is a contemporary free flowing design that respects its 18th century roots.
